Piaggio MP3
Piaggio MP3
Concept and Versions
With the Piaggio MP3 in 2006 a new vehicle concept was introduced, which features as special feature two tiltable front wheels and a conventionally driven rear wheel. There were initially three engine variants available with 125, 250 and 400 cc. Later, 300 and 500cc engines replaced the 250cc and 400cc engines. The two front wheels are at a distance of 420 mm from each other, are connected by a complex parallelogram suspension with the frame and allow a curve inclination of a maximum of 40 degrees. This gives the vehicle better stability, and largely prevents tipping over on slippery surfaces. Thus, the MP3 is better suited for bad weather conditions. The three tires continue to provide greater traction than the two-wheeler, which can allow a shorter braking distance, without sacrificing the driving dynamics of a scooter.
The distance of the front wheels was chosen so that the MP3 can be registered with minor modifications as a single-track motor vehicle or as a multi-lane motor vehicle. As of 2006, the variants RL as a scooter (125 RL, 250 RL and 400 RL) as well as the variant LT (LT 250, LT 400 and LT 300 YOURBAN) were available as multi-lane motor vehicles from 2009 onwards. The LT version has additional brake handles a brake pedal that brakes all the wheels, differently mounted front turn signals and another front parking light to meet the legal requirements for multi-lane motor vehicles. Currently versions with 493 cc and 278 cc are offered.
In the first six months after the market launch, over 10,000 units have already been sold.
In 2007, the technically largely identical Gilera Fuoco 500ie ( Italian for fire ) was introduced. This had a stronger engine (40 hp) and a "sportier" optics. For the approval as a multi-lane motor vehicle, however, the track width of the front wheels was 2 cm too low.
In the fall of 2009 Piaggio introduced the MP3 as the first scooter with hybrid drive . Here, the 125 cc engine is supported by an electric motor integrated into the drive swingarm. The lithium-ion battery placed in the helmet compartment under the seat can be recharged while driving in the push mode and separately at a power outlet. The range is to be "when tackling the distance to two thirds in hybrid mode and one third in electric mode" per liter of gasoline up to 60 km each; The acceleration values should be better than the normal models. With the model year 2015, a deactivatable traction control (ASR) and Continental's 3-channel ABS wereintroduced. In addition, the diameter of the front tires has been increased from 12 "to 13".
Driving license right
According to the current Driving License Directive , since January 19, 2013, driving the MP3 requires a motorcycle license (Class A1 for up to 15 kW or Class A for more than 15 kW of engine power). However, the multi-track variant of the Piaggio MP3 may also be driven for reasons of grandfathering with a Class B driving license, if the license was issued before 19 January 2013. New regulation Class B, which was acquired on 19 January 2013, now also includes the driving of three-wheeled motor vehicles in Germany (key code 194).However, as far as the motor vehicle has an engine power of more than 15 kW, this entitlement only applies if the holder of the driving license is at least 21 years old.
