All you need to know about motorcycle tires

What most motorcyclists know about the tires on their two-wheeler is that they are round and black. Of course, there are always those who, for some reason, are interested in this, so they can show an enviable amount of knowledge about the topic itself.
However, this ignorance is understandable to a certain degree. The tires are generally thought of when shopping and in situations where we have problems with them, and for most people it is their concern that sometimes they check that they are pumped.
Many types of tires are designed to last thousands of miles without any or basic maintenance. Knowing the basic things about them will help the driver to take better care of them, as well as to recognize the moment when it's time to buy new ones.
The basics of the moto tire
The simplest way to choose a tire is to buy the same ones you are changing, which is easy if you are driving a motorcycle produced in the last 10-15 years.
Most companies still produce tires identical to those you are changing, and if they do not, there are appropriate replacements that are offered for the category or type of your motorcycle (eg for engines up to 500cc or for turing models). However, if possible, it is best to choose tires identical to those already found on your motorcycle.
Why is it important? Companies often work together with one or more tire developers to deliver exactly the kind of performance they have imagined. So the choice of a tire whose dimensions are very different from the original can dramatically change the behavior of your pet.
However, it happens (albeit very rarely) that the changes are positive, but for every tire experiment you need to know your motorcycle very well in order to presume its behavior.
Original motorcycle tires are usually quite expensive, which many state as a reason why they have decided on a questionable replacement. Does it have to be so? Does the choice of a tire depend on the contents of your wallet?
The most important data in the search for new tires are motorcycle data you drive (the exact model and year of production). This seemingly trivial piece will also help you buy. It's up to you whether you will buy the cheapest or not, which also depends on your needs when it comes to driving.
Also, you need to know the markings on the tires and understand what are the speed and load indexes.
Manufacturer name - brand name and registered trademark
Model name - e.g. "Diablo Rossa"
Tire size - e.g. 180/55 ZR M / C (73W) TUBELESS RADIAL, where is:
180/55 ZR - nominal width (in millimeters)
17 - wheel diameter (in inches)
M / C - only for use on motorcycles
(73W) - load and speed index
TUBELESS - tire without inner tire pumped by air under pressure
RADIAL - type of rubber construction
Date of manufacture - number of the week and double digits of the year
Approval number - according to ECE R 75 standard
Rotation direction - arrow indicates the direction of rotation of the tire according to the setting (forward-reverse)
DOT - abbreviation for "Department of Transportation", this symbol signifies the conformity of products with the safety standards of the US Department of Transportation
Load and speed indices
Load and speed indices indicate the maximum speed (km / h) for which the tire is approved, as well as the maximum permissible load (in kg) of the same tire at the maximum speed.
pr. 180/55 ZR M / C (73W) TUBELESS RADIAL, with a load index of 73 from 365 kg at a maximum speed of 240 km / h with normal tire pressure.
